Midwifery has been an important part of my life ever since I could remember. Besides being born by the gentle hands of a midwife myself, I have always had a fondness for the emotional, spiritual, and physical components of childbirth. I've been a Registered Midwife in the Province of Alberta since 2004 years and have travelled with hundreds of women on their birthing journey. After receiving my Bachelors Degree in Biological Science from the University of Calgary, I started my midwifery training by moving half way across the world. I studied Midwifery in England at the University of Brighton. My training in the UK ranged from hospital based shift-work to community-based caseload style midwifery. I then completed my midwifery training, at Seattle Midwifery School (SMS) in the United States. As SMS is a "distance learning" institution, I was able to complete my practicum throughout Alberta in both urban and rural settings. I was also fortunate enough to do an international placement in the Caribbean on the island of St. Lucia. While there I gained more valuable clinical experience through not only practical work at their local hospitals, but also by providing prenatal and postpartum care in health centres within the community. Through my extensive and varied forms of training as a midwife, I've been privileged enough to work with various multidisciplinary teams such as Midwives, Obstetricians, Nurses, Radiographers and Public Health Nurses. The diverse cultural, ethnic and social background of my clients has allowed me to gain great appreciation for the women I have cared for and is the basis for my strong conviction in completely individualized care. It also re-affirms my belief that birth is one of the most wonderful and natural parts of life. |
